My first love in photography was and will always be the beauty of the natural world. In landscapes and nature we find ourselves, who we are, and who we will become. Often we begin to realize the vast overwhelming smallness we hold in the cosmic flow of things. So many things we thought were so important just days before, seem to melt away in the presence of wonder. No human can survive without nature, and yet somehow, so many of us take it for granted. It is a wondrous beauty that flourishes with life and very much nourishes our bodies as well as our souls. There are few places in existence as beautiful as Yosemite National Park located in Northern California. Yosemite is without question one of my most favorite places in this world, in many ways a spiritual home. In the vastness and power of the elemental forces that carved the valley and of the sheer magnitude of the ancient trees that still grow in her groves, Yosemite National Park is among the last wonders of the natural world. Many of the great natural wonders have been destroyed by man in the name of progress- parts of the Grand Canyon, Hetch Hetchy, and now the Seven Gorges of the Yanghze River in China. We must do our best not to take these natural resources for granted and we must do what we can to preserve the last of these ancient wonders if we are to save anything for our children to enjoy. In these select photographs I have tried to capture the wonder of life and beauty that breathes in this majestic place. With visitors flocking to the park in droves every year, concerns about pollution in the park have led the Forest Service to limit automobile traffic into the valley, the place where most of these photographs were taken. It was a wonderful time in a wondrous place. But to me, visiting Yosemite in the heart of Winter was particularly special. Without the crush of people who visit during the summer, a visitor could travel in silence with only the wind and the trees as your companions. It is during these times you can hear nature speak to you in soft murmuring whispers, wonders so seldom heard, and in the lulls of silence, you can hear yourself think. -Albert |
