The Unit 2 Introduction

In 2001, when my wife and I embarked with 2 other groups of friends to purchase a house, little did we know what we were getting into. The experience brought forth such a wealth of knowledge about home buying and ownership that I have decided to make what we found and learned available over the web. Home buying can be such a scary and omnious process, with many of us unsure what to expect or look for. Every experience is different, but what you know before hand can not only help you get the house you want, but may also save you many a sleepless night. It is for this reason that Unit 2 was created.

Home ownership is as much an adventure as it is a labor of love. My wife and I live in Unit 2 and this is the story of our home.

Some unusual things to note about the layout of the unit:

  • Differences in size between the size of the front and back stairwells. The front stairwell is considerably wider and longer than the back. (It was great for furniture moving however.)
  • Single chimney located at the center of the house at the conjunction of the second bedroom, the present closet for the first bedroom, the kitchen, and the dining room.
  • There is no fireplace in the unit despite the central location of the chimney.
  • The original door into the unit was located at the top of the front stairwell into the main living room (which is now our Art Room).
  • We suspect there was another door from the entry hall into the dining room located in the left wall about one foot just before the current opening of the kitchen into the dining room (which is now our actually used living room). There is an unusual hollower space in the paneling exactly the same height and width as the present kitchen-dining room door.
  • Closet space is at a premium in this unit and appears to have been added much later by cutting into pre-existing room space.
  • The wall that currently exists between the kitchen and the second bedroom may have been the original door into the room, which happens to be the actual configuration in Unit 1. When I pulled the wallpaper down, I found a great deal of newer plaster work that was roughly in the shape of a door.
  • The enclosed porch has painted wainscotting all along the right, left, and center walls beneath the more modern storm windows.
